From the start of contemplating this mix of light and dark, I was not drawn to either end of the spectrum. Rather, I found myself focusing on the in-betweens -- those moments when it's not light, but it's not quite dark either. More generally, I began to look at the moments when I know that my life (personally) -- or the world (universally) -- has changed, but that change has not yet crystallized into a understood, characterized ethos. The only certainty in those moments is that the previously established, defined way of things can never be recaptured. Sometimes that change is initiated by a conscious decision made by myself, other times that change is instigated by those in power and subjugated upon others without consent; sometimes that moment of change appears to only be a portent of dark things ahead, other times that moment seems to hold enormous potential for beauty and joy. In reality, those moments contain some mixture of all of the above -- the in-betweens (or, as Liz says, the both/and).
